Abstract: "Generally speaking, employers have broad legal discretion to regulate the behavior of their employees. But what happens when an employer’s rules rest on prescriptive gender stereotypes: assumptions about what is appropriate behavior for a person given their gender?  The status of such rules remains highly controversial among courts, commentators, and political actors. I will argue that there is a good case for singling out these rules as especially problematic. And I will consider how we might balance the interests of employees in avoiding them with the interests of employers in enforcing them."

Adam Hosein, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Northeastern University, works mainly in moral, political, and legal philosophy, with a special interest in areas of international concern and issues relating to race or gender. Before coming to Northeastern, he was an associate prof. at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has held fellowships and visiting positions at Chicago Law, Harvard University, the University of Toronto, and the Université Catholique de Louvain.

The Sapientia Lecture Series is funded by the Mark J. Byrne 1985 Fund in Philosophy. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Leslie Center for the Humanities, the Associate Dean for Arts & Humanities, and the Ethics Institute.
