Russ Shafer-Landau (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). "Categorical Moral Reasons"

Friday, October 16, 2015
3:00pm – 4:30pm
103 Thornton Hall
Intended Audience(s): Public
Categories: Lectures & Seminars

Abstract: No matter what you like or care about, there is excellent reason for you to do as morality requires. I believe this. I bet you want to believe this, too--if you haven't already succumbed to criticisms of categorical moral reasons. I'll try to persuade you that categorical moral reasons exist. Then, in Q and A, you'll try to tell me why I'm mistaken, and why we should be OK with the wholly dispiriting conclusion that our practical reasons depend on our contingent commitments. I am not exactly optimistic but am at least hopeful that we might end on the uplifting note that comes from a consensus that categorical moral reasons exist.

Free and open to all. Reception follows.
