Welcome Class of 2027! Join the Philosophy Department for its Academic Open House on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 1:30–2:30 p.m. in 105 and 106 Thornton Hall.
Come meet faculty in the Philosophy Department and learn about our course offerings and our foreign study program. The study of philosophy is exciting on its own terms and it provides students with critical, analytical abilities to succeed in many fields of professional and academic work, as well as a basis for leading a richer, more contemplative life. Students can focus on particular areas within philosophy, such as ethics, law, medicine, art, science, mind and cognition, logic and mathematics, or the history of philosophy.
Students who major or minor in philosophy learn to follow complex lines of reasoning, expose presuppositions, weigh evidence, craft arguments, make objections and replies, offer creative answers to philosophical questions, and construct independent solutions to philosophical problems. Majors in philosophy are knowledgeable about the main contemporary and historical areas, authors, concepts, methodologies, techniques and problems of philosophy. The benefits of a philosophy major extend well beyond philosophy, and our students go on to pursue careers in many areas, including law, film and media, medicine, finance, the arts, and academia.
